How to choose the correct heat pump for your cottage?

Jun 25, 2025

When it comes to heating a cottage, convenience, efficiency, and sustainability are most important. This is why house owners more and more prefer air source heat pumps (ASHPs), especially those with R290 refrigerant, such as our new SIDITE R290 all-in-one heat pump.

But there is still one primary question:

How do I choose the correct size heat pump for your home?

Sizing a heat pump: A simple rule

You typically need 2.5 kW of heating power per 20 square meters of floor space.

That's 1 kW for every 8 square meters.

The procedure is:

160 square meter villa → 160 ÷ 8 = 20 kW heat pump

240 m2 villa → 240 ÷ 8 = 30 kW heat pump

This calculation is made on the basis of average insulation and typical room height. For colder climates or older homes with sub-average insulation, add 10% to 20% to the capacity.

Tip: Oversizing is worse. Oversized heat pumps will short-cycle and be inefficient and subject to premature wear and tear.

Why R290 is so important

SIDITE R290 heat pumps utilize propane (R290) as refrigerant, a natural, non-toxic, environmentally friendly substance with the following properties:

Ultra-low global warming potential (GWP = 3)

High energy efficiency

Lower operating expenses

Quiet operation

It is thus ideal for homeowners who want to keep their carbon footprint minimal without compromising on performance.

Ideal for villas and mansions

Villas typically have to be warmed in larger, broader spaces and offer greater comfort requirements. The SIDITE R290 Monoblock is thus designed to meet these demands with the following specifications:

Silent operation

Power consumption advanced monitoring

Simple integration into underfloor heating systems and hot water

No refrigerant piping is needed indoors

Simple and quick installation. It is quiet and efficient after installation and is ideal for continuous use.

Ready to make the upgrade?

Choosing the right heat pump is not about price, it's about designing a system that is ideal for your home and lifestyle. If you're looking to upgrade or install a new cottage heating system, we can help.

We'd like to offer you a tailored system recommendation.
